Charter Earns Nations's Top Award

(November 13, 2012) - Lancaster, Pennsylvania based Charter Homes & Neighborhoods earned the GOLD 2013 National Housing Quality Award, considered the most coveted award in the homebuilding industry. The award recognizes industry leaders for business performance and a commitment to quality improvement.

During the application process, a team of former winners served as judges to look at every aspect of Charter’s business. From homebuyer experience to trade partner relationships to business results, the judges measured Charter’s ability to plan, execute and improve. Rarely does a homebuilder win during their first year of application, but Charter did. Charter earned a bronze award in 2011, silver in 2012, and achieved GOLD in 2013. We are the first builder to achieve GOLD since 2009, and only the 4th since 2006.
“While most in our industry were placed on survival mode during the worst recession in the homebuilding industry, Charter committed to a three year program that focused on improving our businesses, said Charter President, Rob Bowman. The hard work has paid off. With just a few weeks left in 2012, Charter is on pace to see a 40% increase in sales compared to last year.

“The organization as a whole understands where it is going, what is needed and the roles they each play in achieving the goals established by the leadership team,” said Tom Gillespie, the lead judge for Charter's 2013 entry. “All categories scored solidly… (They) graduated to GOLD-level status.”

The National Housing Quality Award was founded in 1993 and was modeled after the Malcolm Baldridge Award. Sponsored by the National Association of Homebuilders and Professional Builder Magazine, winners of this award have faired better during this housing downturn. Of the 37 gold winners since the awards inception, 90% of them are still in business today.

“I am very proud of our team for accomplishing such a significant goal. Three years ago, with strong headwinds against us, the team set a goal to improve our focus on our homebuyers, create more thoughtful and one-of-a-kind neighborhoods and build a business that delivers results. This GOLD National Housing Quality Award is recognition that while we can always improve, we have reached levels of performance that lead our industry,” Bowman commented.
